San Francisco Part 2 18/08/2009

English:

We meet at 9am and go to have break fast at starbucks,

then a bit of shopping as silvia does not have anything suitable to go to Alcatraz and survive, so she needs some fleece or some heavy stuff to get warm. After some shopping, we meet with Chris and Mel at lobby again and we go to buy the tickets for the municipal transports, so that we can use them in the trams and cable car (the famous ones). We have to take the F line of the tram to the piers, and we are lucky that this time we get really in one of those old trams from Milan (yes, those which are still running in Italy, run here as well, even they did not change some ads and the signs). We were laughing as we remembered Jenny´s birthday party in Milan in one of those...

Finally, we arrive to the piers, there is a big queue to hop on the boat of the 12.00am, and we are very glad we did the booking of tickets in advance, as we can see they are sold out until next sunday¡¡¡ We queue for a while and we get into the boat.

The trip is really short, something like 10 minutes, it is so close and so far away for those who used to be inmates of the prison. The arrival to the island is exciting, a nice explanation by one of the rangers, about the origins of the prison, the people living there and so on, and we head to the introductory film and the guided tour afterwards.

It is really hard to explain the feelings while in Alcatraz, it is a mix of relief (for myself) and sorrow (for those who lived there, both inmates and guards and family). The place is creepy, the cells, there are of all kinds, there were even the ¨good¨ ones... small, big, and the worse of the worse, actually those small one with bars and a thick door with a small nested window. The part which made me the worst impression was the fact that some of the inmates, were able to see from the cells, and through a small windows at the corridor the city of san francisco, and they were even able to hear the voices from the free people at the city.

The sights of the city with its streets like a roller coaster, are amazing. This poor inmates were only lucky for this, they had the better view of golden gate and san francisco ever, but no other privileges.

Once finished the tour, we hop onto the boat and come back to San Francisco, and after having walked for so long in Alcatraz, we decide to have a nice and deserved meal at Hard Rock Cafe.

We take the tram back to Powell Street, Mel hops off, as she is a bit tired, and we keep on going to go to a shop where North Face garments are on sale. The trip is a bit tricky and we realize we are getting into some dodgy neighbourhood. Finally Mel (aka Jesus Phone owner), gives us a bit of light, and we proceed walking, knowing that we are on the right trail. We do some shopping at the shop and decide it has been enough for today, so that we come back to Hotel, first thinking about taking a taxi, but in the end we make it walking without much effort.

After resting for a while, we meet up at 21pm at the lobby, have a some cocktail at Hotel´s Lobby bar, and we ask at the reception for some nice, close and cheap restaurant. Now it is when the funny part arrives, we were told of this cafe, a couple of blocks away from our Hotel, we go there, and while we were checking the menu (after the one in Big Sure, we decided to do it always before entering a place), this thing which happen sometimes, you do not see something, but your mind does, I saw Alessio Cali, a colleague from JRC. I knew he was coming to California, he was staying in Los Angeles, but I did not know

he was coming to San Francisco, and even less that he was coming at same time as we were planning to do so. A nice encounter on the other part of the world :)

We took it easy at dinner, and all of us decided to go for the salads, then we were tired and decided to go for the last drink at the lobby bar at Hotel, but before that, we got a ride on the cable car of powell street.

We had been satisfied with the first cocktail, so why not to have the last one there.

After this last cocktail, we were really tired and had to wake up early the next morning, so we went to bed.

Big Sur - SFCO 17/08/2009

English:

We wake up early, we are close to San Francisco, but still more than 100 miles away. We check-out and we go to the lodge lobby and have a coffee and some muffins as breakfast. Right after that we go to take the 101 to make it a bit faster to San Francisco.

After a while, we decide we need to have a coffee break, so that we stop at a place called Carmel, it is a nice village as taken from the spanish times and with a kind of posh style on it. The girls go for some shopping and after some minutes, we leave the nice place.

We make some stops along the coastline to do some pics and we think a bit about where to stop for lunch, at first we think about going to have it at half moon bay, but in the end, we see that the navigator takes us away from it, and closer to santa cruz, so we turn into give santa cruz a try. The decision is being the right one, walking along the city centre, we discover this small place, crowded of people for a sandwich, and so we do... We discover, why it was so full, the place deserves to be put into routard guide.

After getting full our stomachs, we go to take again the 101 route and make our latest step to san francisco. Once arrived we are amazed about the streets, how different from the rest of the states it is, and most of it, how thick the fog is here, and it is coming down the hills. We put the golden gate on the navigator to take us there, and after a bit while (san francisco seems not to be so big, but it is...), we arrive there, we got really fascinated about the huge bridge, the amazing colours, the fog covering the highest parts of it... it is impossible to describe. We cross the bridge in the car, the more than 2 kilometers long bridge, taking pictures from inside the bridge while freezing by the wind, finally we see a vista point and we stop there to have a more quiet and better view.

We do a lot of pictures, all positions, sizes and colours, and we set a foot on the bridge to arrive at least to the middle... the girls are so freezing to the bone, that decide to come back and give us the job of doing good pics. We try, and we get them, even risking our lives because of the cold and the wind, we had to tighten the caps, so that they do not fell down, like others we saw...

Once we have done it with the Golden Gate, we go to Hotel to relax a bit and do a bit of shopping, actually we are close to Union square, so we have a lot of shops around, and with this cold weather, we need something not to get some kind of brother of swine flu. Later on we meet at the lobby, and decide to go to Chinatown for some chinese restaurant, and try the proper one at the biggest chinese community outside china. We queue to enter this restaurant, famous one, but someone tells Melinda to try the one next door, the girls have a look to the menu, and it convinces them, so that we give it a try, with great satisfaction, another one to put on the routard guide, at least the space from the big sur one should be left free.

We are really tired after driving the whole day, so we give us an appointment for the coming morning at the lobby and good night, no time for last drink...

Santa Barbara - Big Sur 16/08/09

Fran

English:

We wake up at 9am and amazingly we are pretty ok from jetlag. We slept enough and we are fresh to tackle the new day ahead.

Chris y Mel suggest us the possibility of leaving today noon and go towards north so that, we do not have to do so many miles on monday to get to San Francisco. We will sleep by the coast in a place called BIG SUR (promising :) )

Before all this, we already begun with a couple of coffees nespresso to cheer us up a bit and have a look on the internet where we can sleep in big sur.

After, we head a place to have a typical californian breakfast, scrambled eggs with cheese, bacon, potatoes... yummi, I hope we will last without eating until dinner... :)

Right after the breakfast, we get ready and begin our journey to Big Sur, it will be a long journey, but it is worth the beautiful landscapes.

We stop a couple of times to admire the lanscapes of cliffs, the coast, people doing kitesurf...

After several miles, we stop at a place called San Luis Obispo to have a coffee in a Starbucks (loads of them in the USA). After, we follow the coastline and at a certain point, we begin climbing a mountain, which is really the coast shaped like that in this zone. Incredible landscapes, winding curves, cliffs... Not a lot of time to admire the landscape while dricving though...

At a certain point, in a village called Gorda, we have to fuel, as we were already almost running out fuel... in USA, prices of fuel are not regulated, so we found the most expensive gas station in the area, it were 4.799 per gallon, while you can find it for 3.299, that is life... it is really much cheaper than Europe, anyway...

Finally, we hit big sur county, marvellous, among forests, cliffs and pacific ocean at our feet, we decide to go to dinner before doing check-in at Big Sur Park Lodging. We go to a place called Big Sur Bakery & Restaurant, close by the place where we will spend the night. It is recommended by routard guide, we sit down, order some wine and some pizzas, as the rest of the menu was a bit expensive. The pizzas are expensive 20$ and really strange, like the pizza Chris ordered (famous pizza with meatballs :( ). After more than 45 minutes waiting, having asked the waitress and several trays of bread with butter, we got fed up and decide to go away. We say we leave and Melinda asks for the bill. In the meantime, Chirs and I go to the car, while silvia waits Melinda to go out from restaurant. Mel goes out to ask Silvia for some money as she ran out, and the crazy waitress running after her, thinking whe was leaving without paying 5$¡¡¡ Hilarious¡¡¡

We lost the sunset and we were hungry, so that we decided to go to another place closer to our final destination. We went to this restaurant on the route, close to the place where we should sleep, and we got our meals in a really fast pace, beginning eating as we were really hungry.

After recovering, we go to do check-in, make ourselves comfortable, lit the fire and got a couple of bottles of californian wine in good company... then sleep, we were tired

Londres - L.A. 15/08/2009

"Que has comprado?"... Deberia haberle respondido...

English:

The alarm rings at 5am!!! We had already booked a cab to go to airport, so the guy was waiting for us and really sleepy we got to terminal 4 in heathrow.

All the bloody procedures to get to the states begin, we were asked several times before and after doing checkin about security question and very stupid ones... Even the guy asked me if i had left to someone my laptop and it could have been modified... Modified? Wanna know if i intalled windows cracked version? ;) For God's shake!!!

After all this, I needed a really large capuccio, so I did :)
The last one at boarding gate... "what did you buy?"... I should have answered... "is it your business?" but I was polite.

The plane is big, fully booked and has a lot of facilities to offer... To be honest it's being a piece of cake getting to Houston.

No many worries getting clearance at immigration, and another flight, we are almost there!!!!

We pass immigration control in Houston without probs, much better than expected, 15 mins and picking up the luggage. But, as usual americans are always a suprise, stupid question for silvia: "How do you know that your friends live where they told you?". Where do they get these kind of questions? Really, the one who makes them has great sense of humour...

After this, we have a couple of hours rest in Houston, and again, at 15 hours Houston time we take the las flight which will take us to LA. The airplane is much smaller, it seems strange and much more boring this latest part of the trip, even if it lasts only 3 hours and a half.

Finally, in LA!!! We get out of the terminal and we begin running after the bus which will lead us to the rent a car facilities. We get there, and another queue to do (almost 1 hour). In the end, we get our car, one of those which resemble al capone and mafia, a chrysler, and we follow the road to get out of LA and get to Santa Barbara.

After more than 2 hours driving, 95 miles and incredible sunset by the coastline, when the twilight was almost there... we arrive to Santa Barbara 2516 Bath St., a lovely house and Chris and Mel waiting for us. It was really sensitive welcome, it was ages since last time we saw her... A couple of beers a nice shower and we went to have dinner to a local japanese restaurant... It is 11pm western coast time and we deserve to sleep as much as possible...

California, allá vamos / California, we are coming / California, arriviamo

Fran

English:
After months of getting everything ready, being in a hurry, nervous and all the rest, finally tomorrow 15th Aug 2009, at 21.30 CET we will begin our trip to California.

It will be interesting, that's for granted, but having to fly for 15 hours from London, first we have to get there, and after that, driving 2 more hours until Santa Barbara is going to be a challenge, but... that's life... Nobody said it was going to be a piece of cake. I guess the worse will be getting so many hours in a plane, I am not used to flying long hauls anymore and really gets into my nerves.

From tomorrow on, we will describe more in detail, time allowing and with pics.

Gonna go to finish the preparing the luggage :)
Fran

Italiano:
